JARED HALLOCK

Instructor

Jared Hallock is a drummer, percussionist, educator and producer whose career spans rock clubs, jazz ensembles, orchestral stages, experimental music, recording studios and classrooms.  He holds a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance from the University of Idaho and a bachelor’s degree from Berklee College of Music, where his studies emphasized drums, music production and music business.

Rather than following one traditional path as a touring or session drummer, Jared has built a wide-ranging career grounded in musicianship, adaptability, creative problem-solving and service to the music.  His experience gives him a unique perspective on what it means to think, prepare, communicate and create with a professional mindset across many different musical environments.

As a drummer and percussionist, Jared has performed with punk, rock, hip-hop, jazz and experimental groups, as well as big bands, small jazz ensembles and classical ensembles.  He performed during each of the first ten years of Treefort Music Fest in a variety of bands and rhythmic roles, has appeared as a drummer and percussionist in every year of the Boise Experimental Music Festival, and has performed at numerous other festivals.

Jared’s free-jazz work was featured on KEXP Seattle’s Sonarchy Radio. His classical background includes performing with the Idaho-Washington Symphony, appearing as a featured marimba soloist with orchestras, and writing and performing extensive multiple-percussion parts for ensembles including the Langroise Trio.  He has also toured as a theatrical percussionist and performed as a solo marimbist and vibraphonist.

Over a 30-year teaching career, Jared has helped develop generations of drummers and percussionists, many of whom have gone on to build successful careers of their own.  His teaching combines strong technical foundations with a highly creative approach to rhythm, musicianship and professional development.  He helps students understand that being professional-minded involves more than technical ability.  It also requires preparation, communication, reliability, musical judgment, adaptability and the ability to serve the song rather than simply display technique.

Jared is currently developing rhythmic breathwork, an approach that connects breathing, pulse and physical awareness to help drummers strengthen internal time, focus, relaxation and creativity.  As a producer, recording drummer and band coach, he also brings direct insight into what makes a drummer valuable in the studio: preparation, communication, sound, feel, consistency, adaptability and the ability to make creative decisions that support the artist and the music.

Jared’s goal is not to prescribe one formula for becoming a professional drummer, but to help each drummer become more intentional, prepared, creative and valuable within their own musical path.
